You may install a typical DVD player or something as complex as a gaming console. At present there are no laws governing the installation of video equipment inside a car.

Prices for these units can go from $800 up to $2400, depending on the brand, model and the number of specs that come with the unit. Pioneer, Clarion, Kenwood and Alpine are all good choices for automotive video systems.

Which Type Of Head Unit Should I Buy?

Right now there are three available standards in the market: CD players, MP3 players and WMA players. Years ago it was rather difficult and expensive to find an MP3 player for an automobile but the units are now common and versatile. If a player can read an MP3 disk it can also read a CD.

Since WMA is a different compression standard (one created by Microsoft), not all receivers are able to reproduce it. Some audiophiles, however, insist that the quality of a WMA file is superior to that of an MP3 and so demand the capability. Consequently, receivers are available that can read all three formats without significant cost increases.

What about cassette players? Are they still being used? As a matter of fact, yes. Many people who converted their original album collection to cassettes are unwilling to make the financial jump to CDs and continue to support a niche market for cassette players.

What Is Satellite Radio?

As the name implies, satellite radio receives its signal from orbiting satellites and offers a large selection of available stations and programs with excellent sound quality for a monthly subscription fee.

Right now there are two competitors, Sirius and XM. In the case of Sirius subscribers pay a $13 monthly fee or a $500 lifetime fee for the receiver, plus, a $10 set-up fee. Sirius currently lists 4 million costumers. Its competitor, XM, has a wider client base with 6.5 million costumers. XM charges a $12.95 monthly fee and varying reception programs.

Where I Can Find Sources Of Review For Car Audio & Video?

An excellent online source for reviews is Amazon.com which uses a customer evaluation system. Be sure to read each individual comment to pick up on issues not related to the product itself but to the quality of the delivery service or customer service. (Another option is Cardomain.com where buyers also review products. Of the two, however, Amazon has the greatest product range.).

Although Pioneer car audio is an excellent and familiar choice for any car owner who wishes to change his current audio system, don't limit yourself to considering just one brand. Check out what the market offers, there are many quality car audio systems available that will deliver years of entertaining, on the road service.
