Best GPS Navigation Units - Buying and Installation Guide

GPS navigation has revolutionized the world. And thanks to recognized brands like Garmin GPS or Magellan GPS, their use has expanded throughout America and the world.
For many outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, and travelers it is almost inconceivable to think of modern life without these instruments.

Industries, corporations, and average consumers around the world have come to depend on GPS units. The technology is used for such diverse purposes as navigation within cites and for vessels to maintain their correct course at sea. Their uses are almost unlimited and continue to grow exponentially.

What Is GPS Navigation?

GPS navigation goes back to the 1960s when the U.S. armed forces created a satellite navigation system named Transit. It wasn't until the 1980s that it was decided that GPS technology should migrate to the civilian sector. It took more than 10 years to reach the level of exactitude that we know today. At its current level of evolution the GPS system plots position using 24 satellites in orbit around the Earth.

The answer to how GPS works is relatively simple. The network of satellites emits a signal to the Earth, which is captured by the GPS unit. Using a pre-programmed calculation algorithm the unit calculates latitude, longitude, elevation and even the correct time. The functional use of a GPS isn't limited by weather and the units can determine location within a 10 meter radius of accuracy.

The price for these units isn't high considering the service they provide. A portable GPS unit costs approximately $100 depending on the brand, model, functionality, and included accessories such as companion computer software. The use of the service itself does not require any monthly fees.

Where can I Find Reviews Of GPS Units?

An excellent place for GPS reviews is Amazon.com. This is one of the few online retailers that publish the opinions of consumers who have bought a particular product. Be sure to read the individual buyer comments rather than relying on the rating expressed in number of stars. Only by reading each comment will you find information regarding particular problems with a given unit or issues involving its delivery or warranty.

Another excellent source for information is Cnet.com. All you need to do is just type the word "GPS units" in the site's internal search engine to be taken to reviews of individual units. These reviews are much more technical in nature but do include consumer comments as well. The site will allow you to compare units and offers links to current prices offered by online retailers. Using these two research sources you should be able to make an informed decision about a GPS unit.
